What is VAR?

VAR was first introduced by the international football association Board (IFAB) in 2018. The main goal being "minimal interference, maximum benefit", VAR aims to provide a way for "clear and obvious errors" and "serious missed incidents" to be corrected. VAR stands for video assistant referee, the role of VAR is to help the on field referee with clear and obvious mistakes and allow decisions to be over turned or looked at again. VAR is a small group of people who watch the game live and can re watch and stop and review footage to review things such as offside goals, red card offences, clearly missed penalty's and clear and mistaken identity.

Why was VAR introduced?

VAR was introduced into football to provide assistance to the on field referee. Goal line technology was the first aid introduced to help the referees, VAR then followed suit. VAR's main aim is to reverse clear and obvious mistakes made during the game. VAR is very useful for things such as mistaken identity or missed handballs. The issues and controvesy tends to come due to the lack of consistancy and the extremely tight off-side calls.
